Our Land
At Oude Compagnies, we hold a firm belief that the true essence of quality and beauty in wine emanates from the vineyard itself.
We allow nature’s artistry to shine through, honouring the unique characteristics of our terroir and letting the grapes tell their own story.
Soil
Oude Compagniees Post exhibits very diverse soil types and structures. This allows us to be very specific in the style of wine we want to produce.
The red varietals are planted in very thick clay and rocky soil with lower yielding vines, very concentrated in flavour and with good structure and complexity.
The high percentage of rocks in the soil ensures good infiltration of water as well as maintaining a good soil temperature. The Clay helps to retain water and precious minerals in the soil.
Terroir
The Unique Location and terroir of our vineyards lead to the production of superb wines which truly reflect a sense of origin.
Oude Compagnies Post is located high up against the rocky mountain slopes of the Tulbagh Valley and is South-East facing.
The early morning sun and cool afternoon breeze from the mountains allow the grapes to stay healthy and achieve optimum phenolic ripeness.
Biodiversity
The farm is surrounded by indigenous fynbos which grows next to the vineyards and in some cases we have left the indigenous vegetation in between the rows to grow in symbiosis with the grapes.
The aromatic and complex aromas of fynbos add to the final complexity and quality of the wine.
The little creeks and mountain streams surrounding the vineyards ensure good drainage of the soil during winter and also have a cooling effect on the vines during summer.
Our Unique
Buchu Cultivation
At Oude Compagnies Post, we’re privileged to be situated in one of the rare regions where Agathosma Betulina, more commonly known as Buchu, grows naturally. This unique occurrence is a result of our distinct microclimate and slope, which create the ideal conditions for this exceptional fynbos species to flourish.
Recognizing the exceptional potential of our location, we’ve diversified our operations by cultivating and commercially growing Buchu on our land. It’s a thrilling venture that honors the natural gifts of our region while offering an exceptional product for a range of industries.
Buchu is much more than a native plant to us. This precious species has a multitude of applications across several industries including pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetics. Its medicinal properties make it an important ingredient in the healthcare industry, while its distinctive taste and aroma have won it a place in the food and cosmetic sectors.
Protea Sector
In addition to our vineyards and buchu cultivation, we’ve also turned our attention towards growing a beloved symbol of South Africa, the protea.
Specifically, we’ve invested in planting the majestic King Protea and the vibrant Madiba Protea, named in honor of Nelson Mandela.
The King Protea, with its large striking bloom, is the national flower of South Africa and a true reflection of the rugged beauty of our landscapes. The Madiba Protea, a radiant pink variety, embodies resilience and hope, reflecting the inspiring spirit of its namesake.
At Oude Compagnies Post, we’re not just growing proteas, we’re nurturing a part of South African heritage, reinforcing our commitment to the biodiversity of our land, and contributing to the vibrant tapestry of our agricultural endeavors.
